Caprine arthritis and encephalitis (CEA) is a viral disease of goats, Economic importance. Caprine arthritis and encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a lentivirus that infects its hosts for life. Although most infections are subclinical, some animals develop intractable progressive syndromes such as polyarthritis in adult animals and encephalomyelitis in goat. This virus too causes indurative mastitis, resulting in a decrease in milk production. The ECVA infections reduce productivity in goats for life dairy farmers, especially when the prevalence of infection within a herd is high. In addition, the VAEC creates a barrier to the export of goats from countries where it is endemic, including the United States
